We reveal the secret of the window in the steam room: why is it needed? Determining the optimal location for installation

Whether to install a window in a steam room or not is a moot point, since in any case, heat loss through it will be much more noticeable than through a solid wall. In addition, the installation process itself requires a certain amount of resources and time. And when building a bathhouse is done with your own hands, it is not always clear where exactly to place it and what are the advantages of a window for a steam room. At the same time, most experienced bathhouse builders make steam rooms with a window, since the steaming process in this case becomes even more comfortable and variable.

Where to put a window in the steam room

Based on the main function of the window: ventilation, it is best to place it opposite the door.
But...., it all depends on the location in the steam oven, shelf, benches. Of course, the location of the window in the steam room must be thought out in advance, even at the level of ordering the log house. Otherwise, it turns out that:

  • Bath furniture (shelves, bench, stove) is in the way
  • the window looks directly onto the windows of the neighbor's house (in the best case) or his toilet (in the worst case)
  • there is nowhere to install the window, there is no free wall
  • The window faces north - not a very good side of the world

Let the window be:

  • on the adjacent wall from the door
  • The best side of the world is considered to be the west
  • at the opposite end of the steam room, away from the sauna stove

Whether or not to install a window in a steam room is a matter for the owner. However, all questions regarding the quality of installation of a window in a steam room can be resolved with the help of a good specialist carpenter.

Do you need a window in a steam room?

Design flaws

Obviously, the main disadvantage of the window is that it provides additional heat loss. However, with proper manufacturing and use of a sufficiently sealed design, this drawback becomes almost imperceptible. A little lower, in a separate section, we will consider a technology that minimizes temperature losses in the area of the window opening.

A significant drawback of the window is its theoretical ability to suddenly crack when cold water hits the glass. But in practice, this will only happen if aggressive high-temperature conditions are used, when the atmosphere in the steam room is heated to more than 100 degrees for a long time.

In this case, there is a possibility that the window will heat up enough that if cold water hits it, the sudden temperature change will lead to cracking of the glass. Here you need to install only special glass that is resistant to temperature changes. If the steam room is used mainly in Russian bath mode (the temperature in the steam room is no more than 60-70 °C), then the window, which is usually located on the wall opposite the stove, does not heat up above 40-45 °C.

Also, the presence of a window in the wall of the steam room leads to the formation of condensation on the surface of the glass, which will flow onto the window sill below it. Over time, this leads to an acceleration of the aging process of wood, but can also be excluded from the list of disadvantages by installing a special double structure, which is discussed in the following sections.

Advantages of window placement

Now about the advantages of a window in a steam room. In practice, there are many more of them than shortcomings, so if, in terms of resources and time, installing a window is included in a bathhouse construction project, then the owner is unlikely to ever regret installing it.

  1. Firstly, the window allows you to hover in daylight without the need for an additional electric light source. In some cases, installing electrical wiring in a steam room involves even greater difficulties than simply installing a window. But if you still decide not to install windows, then we recommend that you order sconces made in China for good lighting of your premises.
  2. Secondly, it becomes possible to use the most effective method of one-time ventilation of the steam room - burst ventilation. In addition, the window in the steam room is usually located at such a level that it is much easier to ventilate the room with it than with special ventilation ducts, which are usually located under the ceiling in a less accessible place.

From the point of view of self-awareness during the soaring process, a window adds significant variety to it if it overlooks a beautiful landscape. Otherwise, it is not much different from a regular lamp. Also, in large steam rooms, from a design point of view, the window will become the brightest and most attractive element of the interior.

Steam room window size

Our ancestors always made a window in the steam room. But its size was very minimal, just so that ventilation could be arranged.

But previously, bathhouses were built entirely from solid linden logs. Linden has a much lower thermal conductivity than pine, so the bath can be heated faster and it holds the temperature better.

In addition, linden wood does not rot, it is very durable even under wet operating conditions. Therefore, the ancestors were not very worried about ventilation and airing.

Nowadays, log houses for baths are mainly made of pine.

If you still decide that you need a window for ventilation, then try to make its dimensions optimally proportional to the size of the steam room itself.

The size of the window in the steam room for ventilation can be made according to the boiler room standards: 0.025 m2 per 1 m3 of steam room volume. For example, a steam room with dimensions of 2x3 m and a height of 2 m. The volume of the room is 12 m3. This means that the window area should be 0.3 m2

Which corresponds to the standards indicated on the Internet as optimal: 5% of the floor area. This also turns out to be 0.3 m2

You can focus on the standard window sizes that are commercially available: 30x40cm, 40x60cm, 60x80cm.

In this example, the size of the window in the steam room is 0.5x0.5 m (with an area of 0.25 m2)

Where to install the window? Height from shelves and floor.

A window can become a source of significant heat loss and an obstacle to the natural circulation of hot and cold air in the steam room if it is placed in the wrong place. The window installation height from the floor should not exceed 1 meter, and the optimal distance from the shelf to the bottom of the window frame is 55 cm. The height of the upper edge of the window sash should not be higher than the door level.

Prev 1of1 Next

The location of the window inside the steam room is chosen in such a way that it would preferably be in the center of the shelf where the person being steamed will lie.

Prev 1of1 Next

Prev 1of1 Next

An additional exhaust hole is installed under the shelf, which closes while the bath is heating and opens along with the window to ventilate the steam room after use.

The optimal window size is no more than 50x50 cm. You should make a design of large dimensions only if you have a strong desire to have a large view in the direction where it opens. A window of 0.5x0.5 meters provides sufficient space for observation from inside the steam room, and from the outside, nothing will be visible through such a small window if you look through it into the steam room.

How to seal window openings in a bathhouse

Before you provide openings for wooden windows in the bathhouse, carefully consider where the stove, sunbeds, and sink will be located. Experts recommend adhering to the following requirements:

  1. The optimal placement of the window is at the level of the top shelf; if we are talking about a washing room, it is better to move it to head height.
  2. If the window sash is placed at a distance of 1 m from the floor surface, such a clever move accumulates and retains heat.
  3. Windows may vary in size; there is no single size. The ideal size of window openings has been experimentally established - 60x80 cm. There is enough natural lighting, heat losses are minimized.
  4. In the washing room it is customary to install a window with two sashes, one half of which opens to the street. The window is decorated, and a table for tea is placed near it.
  5. Metal valves show good wear resistance; they are not affected by moisture and do not rust.

A window is installed instead of a worn-out window, or during the construction stage of the bathhouse, an opening is planned from scratch. If the time has come to replace the old product, inspect the walls near the window opening, get rid of rotten logs; moldy and damaged logs are not suitable. Measurements are taken with your own hands, taking into account the following recommendations:

  1. The openings are cleaned of dirt and debris.
  2. Measure the height and width from the bottom and top, and record the minimum values on paper.
  3. Order rectangular openings; anything extra can be trimmed.

Measurements are carried out using a plumb line and a building level.

The installed frames form joints and voids between the casing and the walls of the bathhouse, so they are treated with insulating material. This must be done taking into account the following rules:

  1. Prepare flax fiber, jute, polyurethane foam.
  2. Use polyurethane foam, spraying it in the form of a “sausage”, starting from the middle, gradually moving towards you, then draw exactly the same strip from the middle to the outside. The load from the foam increasing in volume is distributed evenly, which means it is possible to avoid window deformation.
  3. To protect the insulation from the humidity that is present in the bathhouse, use a piece of vapor barrier tape and install trims. If work with platbands is carried out inside the bathhouse, use liquid nails, but only nails will do inside.
  4. Place a paste or solution of diluted wallpaper glue into the cracks.
  5. The outside of wooden windows is painted dark; this paint absorbs heat.

It's time to install glass for the window frame - step-by-step instructions look like this:

  1. Cut the glass to the required size, leaving a gap of 2 mm between the glass and the folded surface.
  2. Place the glass on the folds, secure the result with nails and treat the cracks with a special putty for windows; sometimes a double layer of material is required.
  3. If the putty is double, the folds are covered with a 3 mm thick sealant. Walk over the glass, press firmly and secure with nails. Use the putty again. Thick putty will not allow rain to penetrate between the glass and the rebate, and there will be no vibration that occurs in the wind.

Parameters and location of the window in a Russian bath

Once upon a time, windows were installed very tiny, only to allow steam to escape. This was due to the fact that the steam room did not have the proper level of thermal insulation, which can be created today using foil materials

And it was important to preserve every degree of heat

Now the windows are thicker, and the quality of installation of bathhouses is better, so the heat loss from installing windows is much less

But it is important that your window solves the following problems:

  1. Provided good drying of the room after finishing the bath procedures. And for this it is best to mount two small windows: above the shelf and below it.
  2. Excess steam and temperature could quickly evaporate if you overdo it with firewood. To remove excess heat, opening the doors is not enough. We need to create a draft.
  3. Could be an additional exit in case of fire. Fire departments always recommend that in rooms with a high fire risk, create a window of such a size that you can jump out through it in case of fire at the door.

It follows from this that installing a blind window is useless. It must definitely open.

Above the shelf, a window provides temperature and humidity control, as well as burst ventilation. Under the shelf - keeps the tree healthy. It is opened in the warm season, when the bathhouse is not used, in order to completely dry the floor and walls. During the summer period, there is the greatest likelihood of wood rotting and fungal attack. Simple ventilation expels visible vapors, but everything that has settled on structures must be dried gradually. This is why they open the bottom window slightly, allowing air to flow freely through the bathhouse.

Without a lower window in the steam room, the safety of shelves and other wooden structures is more difficult to ensure, because there will not be an adequate level of ventilation

Types of ventilation

There are quite a lot of design options for organizing this kind of supply/exhaust systems, and there is simply no single, universal option acceptable for any room.

All existing systems according to their operating principle are divided into the following types:

Natural. Ventilation occurs due to the intake of street air, its mixing in the room and the natural displacement of exhaust air.

Forced. An additional device – a fan – is switched on. Most often it is installed on the hood, but it can also be installed on the inflow. A fan is used in each room of the bathhouse.

Combined - a symbiosis of the first and second options.

DIY wooden sauna window

The walls of the bathhouse are raised, the roof is closed, it’s time to think about installing doors and windows. Doors and windows for a bathhouse can be purchased ready-made, but many craftsmen make these products with their own hands. I already talked about how to make a door to a steam room in a previously published article.

Today we’ll look at how to make a wooden bath window with your own hands.

Many projects do not provide for the installation of a window in the steam room. But, you see, even a small window adds comfort in a limited enclosed space. And if you make the window open, then after completing the bath procedures it is easy to ventilate the room. It is known that in rooms with high humidity, wood quickly loses its appearance and mold and mildew appear.

The sauna window has two sashes that open outwards and inwards into the steam room. The outer sash has single glazing, and the inner sash has double glazing. A seal is glued along the perimeter of the overlap of each sash. This window design and its small size prevent heat loss in winter.

Coniferous wood (spruce, pine) is used to make sauna windows. I had 100x40 mm boards available. The window frame and window sashes were made from them.

Each plane has its own finishing coating

Traditionally, a bathhouse has three rooms - a steam room, a washing room, and a relaxation room. In each room it is necessary to definitely finish the walls, floor and ceiling.

The steam room welcomes ceramic or wood flooring. The advantage of such floors is their naturalness and roughness. True, for the floor you will have to select wood that does not slip and does not rot. Therefore, oak and birch are immediately crossed out.

Decorating the inside of a bathhouse with clapboards with your own hands has an analogue option - covering the walls with standard boards. As for the ceiling, it must be hemmed.

The washing room allows the use of lining and boards for wall cladding. But the floors and ceiling can be organized using porcelain tiles and a suspended ceiling, respectively. If the latter hits your pocket, then you can limit yourself to plasterboard sheets.

The rest room does not have any special requirements for decoration (although the walls, floors and ceiling should continue the general idea of a wooden bathhouse).

Installation of window structures in a bathhouse

It is clear that it is better if the installation location is planned in advance and recorded in the project. When laying bricks, logs or assembling a frame structure, an opening is left, according to the size of which the frames are then made. Installation also comes with a number of recommendations. In a brick bath, the frames are sealed with construction foam, and additionally everything is plastered with a mixture. No gaps are allowed.

There are also no particular difficulties in the log structure. All cracks are caulked with linen material or jute. It is a little more difficult to seal window openings in a frame bath. During installation, the partition between the outer and inner walls is carefully insulated. The frames are installed on polyurethane foam, and the outside of the target is sealed with casing. The inside is sealed by double calcining the heat insulator and covering the walls with clapboard.

You can make a window frame with your own hands the old fashioned way. But without special equipment, it will not have an original appearance, and the degree of its thermal stability will not be at a high level.

Window material: wood or plastic?

When choosing a window for a steam room, take into account that the temperature and humidity there are off the charts. If you use plastic, it will more easily withstand the wet mode of a Russian bath than a dry type of sauna. In a hot, dry room, plastic begins to warp and melt. Moisture slightly inhibits this process. But the tree is more afraid of humidity, and can swell in “wet” bathhouses. The ideal option is special windows for baths, where the glass is tempered and the frame material is designed to withstand high temperatures.

A very useful addition is infrared spraying on the back of the window. It blocks the passage of infrared rays outward, which carry away heat from the steam room. Therefore, the steam room will maintain the same temperature for longer.

Therefore, we would recommend that you leave the window. This is not an aesthetic element, but an important detail in maintaining the “health” of the bathhouse.

Advantages of plastic frames

Windows with PVC frames have the following positive qualities:

  • tightness and soundproofing;
  • do not tend to absorb moisture, so there is no danger of swelling;
  • durability;
  • no special maintenance required;
  • resistance to temperature fluctuations;
  • can be easily opened to ventilate the room.

It is better to choose double-glazed windows for a bathhouse, which can guarantee tightness and good thermal insulation. Such products are able to provide a stable indoor microclimate even at very low outside temperatures.

Choosing windows for a bath - advantages and disadvantages

Many people argue that room humidity is not the best condition for wood, and they give preference to plastic structures. This is only partly correct. Plastic is not bad for a washing room or rest room, but is not acceptable for a steam room. True, if the temperature in the steam room does not exceed 70°, then you can use a plastic window.

Plastic windows have undoubted advantages:

  • are not afraid of moisture;
  • resistant to temperature changes;
  • do not require treatment with antiseptic agents;
  • easy to maintain;
  • have an attractive appearance,

The choice of tree is just as important. Wood must meet certain requirements:

  • resistance to high temperatures, linden, oak, aspen, these varieties are passive when heated, create a pleasant atmosphere, comfort;
  • low residual humidity, not higher than 12%;
  • You cannot use conifers that release resin when heated; the fumes are pleasant, but not always useful.
  • Impregnation and protection from moisture are required.

For a bathhouse, it is necessary to install double-glazed windows; they must be extremely sealed

It is important that there are no streams of condensation flowing down the window sill onto the walls. Double glazing will prevent such phenomena and retain heat more reliably

Advice! A bathhouse requires a minimum of windows; small rectangular frame structures should be installed. The main heat losses occur in the frames; the smaller the opening, the more reliable the insulation.

In this regard, they are often installed only in the locker room or rest room.

Among the positive aspects, it is worth noting the following number of advantages that plastic double-glazed windows have during operation:

  • resistance to excess moisture;
  • ease of care;
  • durability and minimum costs for materials during repairs - for example, permanent painting, which is required when installing wooden windows;
  • high-quality noise insulation performance;
  • not prone, unlike wooden products, to damage by wood pests.

It is much more profitable to make wooden windows for a bathhouse with your own hands. They can be installed in the steam room and other rooms (washing room and dressing room). Of course, you will initially need to invest in material and other components, and then constantly maintain the windows in proper condition: treat them with antiseptic, waterproof and other solutions, paint, adjust fittings and eliminate cracks.

They tolerate high temperatures well and are able to maintain their external beauty in extreme conditions for a long time. Such windows fit well into the interior of the bathhouse, emphasizing its beauty and harmony.

Wood is an environmentally friendly material. Therefore, structures made from it are safe for health. They are easy to process and repair

This is very important for a bath. They can be easily painted, scratches and chips can be cleaned, and the action of the fittings can be adjusted.

To extend the service life, it is necessary to treat all parts with special antiseptic solutions that protect against rot and mold, as well as insect attacks.

We style the washing room and non-traditional rooms

So that the interior of the bathhouse inside, because of the washing room, does not look mixed against the backdrop of the bright ethnic stylization of the bathhouse, you can introduce some features into the latter: hang a tub for dousing with water, as has always been the case in steam rooms, put a couple of rough benches on which you can sit, and tiles put it on the wall and floor with some folk motif. And, of course, a newfangled shower room with blue lighting and a huge panel for turning on the hydromassage - hidden from view with a curtain in a cute Russian flower.

Fashion and tribute to tradition - a modern rain shower and a pair of classic tubs

But what to do with the billiard room, without which today even a Russian bathhouse is not a bathhouse? No amount of stylization will help here, even if the table itself is not green and the balls are cut out of wood. There is only one way out - place all the benefits of civilization and objects foreign to the Russian style on the second floor of the bathhouse, where they will not be conspicuous and will not disturb the overall harmony.

Yes, a warm and dry room for organizing a billiard room is what you need! And it’s okay that sometimes, when creating the interior of a bathhouse with your own hands, in some design issues you have to resort to tricks - as Darwin said, it is not the strongest who survive, but those who know how to adapt. And this is not a violation of style - just light eclecticism, in the center of which is the idea of coziness and comfort. Cunning and purely Russian!

Stages of work on making a bath window

The most suitable material from which to make a window is oak. Its appearance and wood texture are suitable for creating windows that will be located in a humid environment.

However, oak wood is quite expensive. Therefore, you can use birch or linden wood. Coniferous wood is not suitable for saunas because resin leaks out of them when heated too much.

Natural wood (oak, birch, linden) has always been considered one of the best materials for constructing a window into a steam room. Coniferous trees (spruce, pine) do not need to install a window in a bathhouse, since they emit resin at high temperatures, which can cause discomfort in humans

It is very important that the wood is of sufficiently high quality

In order to build a window, you must have:

  • Board for making a frame;
  • Glazing beads;
  • Bars for sashes;
  • Metal corners;
  • Glass 4 mm thick;
  • Locking handle, two window hinges;
  • Self-tapping screws;
  • Wood glue.

Initially, all necessary blanks and fragments of the required length are cut, taking into account the indentation for finishing. The standard size for window sashes is 55x45 mm, and for frames is 120x45 mm. Planing is carried out on all sides of the existing tenons and grooves, using a hand-held milling tool, leaving allowances. The next step is finishing the protrusions and grooves. Pre-assembly of the frame and window sashes is carried out, during which the correctness of the joints of all connections is checked. Gluing parts with PVA glue

It is very important to do the work carefully, coat all frames, sashes, and corners. In order to clamp the glued elements, use clamps or self-tapping screws. Handles and hinges are installed; Glazing

Glass having a thickness of 4 mm is installed in the grooves of the window sash, secured from the outside with glazing beads and nails. All elements of the window structure are necessarily treated in several layers with an antiseptic, and the outer part of the wood surface is painted with acrylic paint.

In the cold winter season, sealing gaskets are placed along the window contour.

To install a window in a bathhouse, you must have certain skills, since its durability depends on the quality of the installation. Improper performance of the work can lead to troubles: distortion, glass splitting, frame falling out, etc.

With the right choice of high-quality material, size, location in the room, as well as professional installation, a do-it-yourself bathhouse window can minimize heat loss and last for many years.

Window in the steam room - to install or not?

In the old fashioned way, there are no windows in this room, which is what many still adhere to today. Yes, you can refuse it if the steam room does not exceed one and a half meters in size. But in other cases, how will you dry the room after washing if the preliminary plan does not include natural ventilation? The wood will quickly rot, because superficial drying by opening the door will not save the steam room.

Let's say you spend effort and money on planning and carrying out ventilation. But why these actions, if it is easier to ventilate a small steam room by opening the window? And it can be installed at any time, during the construction process or after all the work. The same cannot be said about ventilation. Connoisseurs of the Russian bathhouse generally claim that the steam room will function properly only if there are two windows.

One opposite the door so that there is a quick change of air. The sizes are small. Enough dimensions to fit a person's head. In essence, this will be a replacement for a floating vent valve, when special exits are made in the walls for ventilation purposes. You need to ventilate the room and lower the temperature a little - open the window and here you are, happiness.

The second is auxiliary. It is placed closer to the ceiling, and in terms of decor it can be opaque or even solid. Its task is to ventilate the ceiling space and the entire interior decoration of the bathhouse. According to the laws of physics, hot air and steam rise upward - this is the most unfavorable zone for wood. And opening the window after the procedures, thereby creating additional protection for the surface from rotting.

Best location

In a steam room, for the main window it is especially important to consider not so much the size as the location of its installation. As many people know, dry steam is not very good for bath procedures and a certain amount of humidity must be present

This is achieved by creating a “pocket” under the ceiling. To prevent steam from escaping from the steam room when opening the front door, the door is made low. There should be at least 60 cm from the top edge of the box to the ceiling. The rules for the location of windows also follow from these recommendations. They need to be made at the level of the top of the door. Approximate dimensions 40x40; 40x504 50x50, etc.

Another smaller window is located under the ceiling. It can be conditionally called a window. This is a vent for steam to escape and can be made from wood. But it is also allowed to install glass ones as decoration. You just need to correctly install the window in the bathhouse and in particular the steam room, in accordance with safety rules and guided by the principles of room decor. According to operating standards, in the steam room and bath sections, windows must open inward. Take this into account when planning and choosing a finished structure in the store.

Decoration of the rest room

The quality of time spent here depends on how interesting the rest room is decorated. And in our country, wooden log houses are especially popular. By ordering one of them, you will soon receive a ready-made building for a sauna made of round logs. It is best to decorate such a room in the Old Russian style.

From time immemorial, the best log house has been considered to be hand-made aspen

It’s not hot in the dressing room, so the walls can be lined with pine clapboard

The flooring of the rest room should be made of warm, moisture-resistant materials. The board is an ideal candidate for flooring. Additionally, warm foot mats are placed on the floor. From the interior items of the bath, you will need to install:

  • table;
  • comfortable armchairs, sofa or loungers;
  • TV, stereo system;
  • fireplace and other decorative elements.

If the room is finished in the Old Russian style, especially when constructing walls made of round timber, Slavic curtains on the windows will look very nice. Hanging shelves are also installed, which are filled with folk utensils of the inhabitants of Rus'. All kinds of jugs and wicker baskets will be a harmonious addition. The interior of the bathhouse consists primarily of oak brooms hanging on the walls. Their number is not limited to a couple of pieces.

The environment inside the bathhouse should give peace and harmony

A relaxation room with everything you need

The ceiling can be made from the same timber, or in a more thematic way. Decorated under an antique twig roof, with inter-row partitions, it fits perfectly into the old Russian design of the bathhouse inside.

The recreation room, furnished to look like an ancient Viking shack, looks very interesting. Heavy, massive rough-hewn boards soaked in dark oils are the main attraction of a Viking room.

A cozy dressing room is an important part of a good bath

The furniture here will also meet the requirements of massiveness and roughness. The dining table can be constructed from timber. This solution will add medieval savagery to the bathhouse.

All elements of the interior, even the chandelier, correspond to the Viking idea. Wrought iron should be everywhere. Fasteners for doors and cabinet doors are made with Middle Ages themes.

Table for soulful tea parties

Animal skins, stuffed animals, antlers and other suitable decorations will serve as decorative elements. Hanging bath brooms everywhere would be appropriate here.

Recommendations for designing wooden windows in a bathhouse

Technological miscalculations and mistakes made when installing windows in a bathhouse are fraught with trouble. Among them:

  • Windows do not close well (the plane is not aligned during installation);
  • abundant condensation on the glass (the technology in the manufacture of the frame junction unit was violated);
  • glass cracks (installation was carried out without casing, the time for shrinkage was not maintained);

The window in the bathhouse, experts say, should be installed a meter from the floor; the size of the opening in the rest room is not of fundamental importance, it is important that you like it. Well, if there are problems with its operation, you can fix it by trimming the excess wood in the plane of the sashes, tightening the hinges
