Gas stove for a bath - design features, best models, useful tips

A gas sauna stove is a convenient and economical heating option. For Russian users, this method is somewhat unusual, since it does not apply to traditional options for arranging a bathhouse.

However, the use of gas furnaces allows for quick and economical heating, the ability to use different types of fuel (natural or liquefied gas), and the absence of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. At the same time, gas furnaces have their own specifics, which do not allow frivolous or inattentive attitude. The issue is serious and requires careful consideration.

Specifics and features

A traditional wood-burning stove in a bathhouse has two important drawbacks: it takes a long time to heat up and can become a source of deadly carbon monoxide.

A gas oven is a modern and efficient alternative to traditional ovens. It is much more convenient to use, costs less and has previously known performance qualities. This distinguishes gas stoves from traditional wood stoves, each of which has its own characteristics.

In addition to rapid convective heating of air, a gas furnace can heat water. In this case, two modes are possible - flow and heating in a storage boiler connected to the burner. Both options give quick, high-quality results, and are often used in pairs.

The heating itself is always carried out in flow mode, but in one case the water immediately goes to the point of analysis, and in the other it enters the container, from where it is supplied again to heat and maintain the set temperature.

The operation of gas furnaces is characterized by uniformity and stability. However, the specific design and design features of the burners may have their own subtleties. In addition, there are furnaces that are completely autonomous and require connection to the power supply network (for the operation of auxiliary control systems).

Therefore, for the correct selection and safe operation of the furnace, it is necessary to understand its structure and operating principle. Otherwise, failures or emergency situations with unpredictable consequences are possible.

The compact stove with chrome elements is a modification of the “Angara 2012” model, popular among bath attendants. Like its predecessor, it is suitable for heating small rooms - from 6 cubic meters. But the declared maximum 18 cubic meters does not hold up, users share in reviews. According to them, the heat transfer of the device is rather weak, and the heat cools down quickly. This disadvantage is compensated by the low cost of operation - the design is adapted for firing with natural gas. It is equipped with a special funnel for supplying water to the lower layers of the heater, which produces light steam of 60 °C, which is ideal for the Russian bath mode. In addition, the model has an attractive design, and the burner is hidden behind an aesthetic screen.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • Compact size
  • Cheap to use
  • Modern colors “terracotta” and “anthracite”
  • Italian automatics
  • Weak heat transfer

Advantages and disadvantages

Statistics show that gas models are the best-sellers among all types of sauna stoves.

This success is due to the many advantages of gas furnaces:

  • rapid heating of rooms and water;
  • fuel costs are lower than alternative models;
  • gas consumption is much lower than the amount of solid fuel or electricity required to heat the same premises;
  • there is no need to monitor the combustion process and constantly add fuel - simply, the combustion mode is adjusted, and the process proceeds automatically;
  • the steam room (and the room in general) is clean, there is no soot or ash;
  • the ability to quickly and accurately adjust the temperature;
  • light weight, no need to build your own independent foundation
  • the presence of heat-protected chimneys, passage units through the ceiling and roof;
  • ease of operation. There is no need to constantly remove ash and clean the ash pan;
  • small size, the stove does not take up useful space from the main room of the bathhouse;
  • a large number of models of different capacities with a wide range of functionality.

Disadvantages of gas furnaces:

  • the need to obtain permits for the operation of gas equipment and carefully follow the operating rules;
  • accidents are possible caused by violations of operating rules or the use of low-quality devices;
  • After turning off the stove, the temperature in the bathhouse drops quite sharply.

Despite some shortcomings, the demand for gas sauna stoves is steadily increasing. The undeniable advantages of such equipment make gas furnaces the most popular and preferred among all possible options.

Gas-wood stoves Vesuvius Skif are praised for their reliability. Thick steel walls and a heavy cast iron door prevent the structure from burning out, thereby ensuring its durability and safety. The entire heating surface is enclosed in a casing, also known as a convector. Thanks to it, the steam room heats up quickly, while infrared radiation is blocked, and the heat in the bath remains soft. A fairly spacious heater (130 kg) ensures a stable temperature. The power is enough to heat the steam room and heat the bathhouse. At the same time, the price is pleasingly affordable, but gas equipment is offered to be purchased separately.

  • No tray for stones

How it works

A gas sauna stove operates on the general principle of gas devices - gas is supplied to the burner. When burned, it releases a large amount of thermal energy, heating the air in the room and water for hygiene procedures.

The main element of the furnace is the gas burner. For sauna stoves, it is specially made and has an elongated shape to accommodate the device in a remote firebox.

The use of conventional stoves in a bathhouse is undesirable - it is easy to get burned on the body or complicate ignition in stoves of a conventional design.

The gas burner is located in the combustion chamber. A copper coil is placed inside it to heat the water. In addition, there may be a heat exchanger for flow heating. A chimney is connected to the combustion chamber, which is then connected to a sandwich pipe and a passage through the ceiling (as a rule, they are purchased separately).

All nodes are located in a common housing. A grate or mesh for the heater is installed in its upper part. The weight of a gas stove (without additional components and heater) is relatively small - approximately 50-70 kg (although variations are possible). For installation, it is enough to provide a strong fireproof (ideally, heat-insulated) platform.

Adviсe

  • Mikhail (gas service inspector)

Owners of bathhouses who want to install gas stoves to heat them must take into account that such a building must have a solid foundation. The volume of the room for installing the unit cannot be less than 8 cubic meters. m. There must be a passage space next to the stove that is at least 1 m wide. The windows of the bathhouse must open outward and have handles on both sides.

  • Vitaly (master gas equipment adjuster)

Small baths with an area of no more than 3x3 m can be equipped with stoves running on bottled gas. Such equipment copes well with the task of heating rooms.

Criterias of choice

Choosing a gas furnace is a responsible task that requires preliminary calculations and knowledge of design features.

The selection criteria are usually:

furnace power

It is necessary to first calculate the required power, taking into account the volume of the room, correction factors for decoration, windows, number of rooms (compartments), etc. The power is selected based on the volume (on sale it is usually indicated for which rooms a particular model is suitable);

burner type

Manufacturers claim that the best option is a supercharged design. However, it has a lot of features that complicate operation. In particular, high-quality grounding and a voltage stabilizer are required. Therefore, atmospheric burners are more often chosen - they are unpretentious and only need stable draft;

water heating method

Double heating is preferable (in a container and in a flow-through method), but here they are guided by their own needs and considerations;

fuel type

Most designs can operate on both natural and liquefied gas. However, most burners require reconfiguration from one type to another, change of burner nozzles and other procedures. They can only be performed by specialists from the service center.

Expert opinion

Lovkachev Boris Petrovich

Bath master who knows everything about steaming

Taking these criteria into account and comparing them with the characteristics of commercially available gas furnaces, the optimal option is selected. An important factor is also the price of the stove, which many users consider the main selection criterion. Here any recommendations are useless - they are guided by their own financial capabilities.

Gas-wood boiler

For those who cannot imagine visiting a steam room without the unique smell of burning wood and want to save on the operation of the bathhouse, a gas-wood stove may be the ideal solution.

Such a heating device is a modern universal design that allows the use of various types of fuel: natural and liquefied gas, coal and wood. This is possible due to the fact that such stoves have removable elements necessary for working on solid fuel and gas.

Devices designed for gas combustion consist of burners, filters and various valves. At the same time, to operate a solid fuel stove you need a fuel receiver. Such heating devices are not new on the modern market. They were used back in Soviet times. A striking example of this is the OGV (heating gas water heating) boiler.

The equipment necessary for gas combustion is installed in the ash pan of the furnace. If it is dismantled, the boiler will function properly using solid fuel.

Gas-wood stoves are very popular not only due to their versatility. Their cost is at an acceptable level, which is an important factor for bathhouse owners.

Best models

There are a large number of gas-fuelled sauna stoves on sale.
Most of them are domestically produced, and this is no coincidence - imported designs do not work well in our conditions. They need a stable supply of electricity, since almost all designs are supercharged. In addition, spare parts and replacement units for such furnaces are too expensive, which sharply reduces user interest.

Domestic furnaces are designed taking into account technical conditions and operating features. They are relatively cheap and unpretentious, have stable parameters, are durable and reliable. Therefore, user interest is focused specifically on domestic equipment.

Let's study the rating of the most popular models of gas stoves for baths:

Questions and answers

The selection and operation of a gas stove for a bath requires experience and skills in operating such equipment. At first, a lot of questions arise, and most of them are the same. It is easier to answer them immediately to eliminate the risk of errors.

Which gas stove burner should you prefer during the selection process?

There are many options here. First of all, you should not be guided by the name of the manufacturer - you need to pay attention to the design of the device and consider how it is installed. The burner flame should not touch the metal of the body or firebox - this will cause rapid burnout and failure of the stove. The best option would be a micro-flare burner, the efficiency of which is in no way inferior to conventional models, but there is practically no danger of burning through the walls of the furnace.

What is more convenient, atmospheric or closed (pressurized) burner design?

Atmospheric structures can be used if the volume of the room exceeds 12 m3. In addition, they are highly dependent on external conditions, require stable draft and are often capricious due to drafts. However, if normal conditions are created for them, the furnace operates stably and does not require electricity. Closed burners require power supply (ventilation, control, control of the combustion process). At the same time, they have much less danger of self-extinguishing.

How to choose the furnace power?

The power of a gas furnace must be calculated. This is a difficult procedure, requiring calculation of the volume of premises, adjustments for the size and number of windows, finishing materials, etc. Independent calculation is difficult, but you can use an online calculator (there are many of them on the Internet, you can use several resources to clarify the results). You can do it simpler and calculate the furnace power based on the ratio of 1 kW per 1 m3. However, this method will give too approximate (and possibly erroneous) results.

What is the fuel consumption of a gas furnace?

This parameter is individual for each model. Average indicators here provide too little useful information, since gas consumption depends not only on the size or configuration of the premises. Here it is necessary to take into account the combustion mode, water heating losses and other specific features. However, for orientation, we can proceed from average values - a 10 kW furnace in average mode consumes 0.85 m3 of liquefied gas or 1 m3 of natural gas per hour of operation.

What is better, to choose an imported or domestic gas stove?

Imported stoves are expensive. In addition, they are too dependent on the quality and pressure of the fuel, the stability of the power supply, grounding and other technical details. Therefore, it is more profitable and correct to purchase an unpretentious and inexpensive gas stove of domestic production.

How often should furnace maintenance be done?

This depends on the load, device parameters, its design and operating conditions. The frequency of maintenance is indicated in the device passport. It is not recommended to ignore the manufacturers' instructions. If exact data is not available, prophylaxis should be carried out once a year. To do this, you should call a technician from the service center or a gas service technician.

Vesuvius Skif Forging 18 (DT-3)

Works. The RCD does not trip, nor does the 16A fuse. For a sauna 1.7x0.9 is enough. The temperature sensors need to be moved down a couple of centimeters, otherwise it takes a long time to heat up and does not heat above 70 (the sensors are behind the front panel, disassemble it a little, it will take 10 minutes).

: I bought a stove to replace an old Harvey Legends 150 cl that was 10 years old. The stove served faithfully and finally burned out. I was surprised by the price, in ten years the price has risen by 9 thousand, I took it for 18. The stove has structurally changed for the better, the design engineers are doing a good job. The size of the firebox did not change, but was raised relative to the ash pan. We had to increase the firebox. The steam felt different, softer.

Vesuvius Lava 18 (DT-3)

It is very convenient when the stove comes with a tank included. In my opinion, this is the first model with a tank that they came out with. If you prefer, you can hang the second tank on the other side. The cast iron firebox is a serious plus! Up to 22 m3 is exactly what you need!! When purchasing, ALWAYS check with the seller whether the tank is included in the price!

Pros: Overall it works. It heats well even up to a high temperature, it was possible to heat up to 100 degrees in 3 hours (room 1.8 × 1.8 × 2.1 + glass door) Disadvantages: It dries out the air (humidity 25% at a temperature of 90 degrees), but I think this is not a problem with the stove. Comment: Overall, a good, beautiful stove, I don’t regret buying it. There were no problems for six months of heating.

EasySteam Sochi K

My review is dedicated to such a product as the Rus Grid 12 L sauna stove from the company Teplodar. I would like to describe my impressions of using the stove. I bought the stove a little over two years ago. I don’t use it all the time, but almost every time I come to the dacha. And this is all weekends (and holidays) throughout the year. Installation did not cause any major difficulties. Installed it together with my son. We finished it in just two days (just in time for the weekend). On the first day, we prepared a place for the oven. Since the weight of the stove is not small (the body itself, a three-meter pipe, stones), we made a foundation for it from a concrete solution. On the second day, they installed the stove, added a chimney, and poured stones. By the end of the second day they lit a fire and enjoyed the pleasant warmth. At first, during gradual heating, a specific, not particularly pleasant smell came from the stove (apparently the paint and technical grease inside the stove itself and in the chimney duct were burnt). But three or four complete heatings were enough and the annoying smell was completely gone. Now in our bathhouse there is only the aroma of blazing, resinous firewood and an oak broom that we steamed in hot water. In general, the whole family is happy with the stove. A six-meter steam room warms up to 60 degrees in an hour (this is in summer; in winter it takes longer, almost two hours). Our steam room is lined with basalt insulation (like the bathhouse), completely lined with aspen clapboard, and equipped with reflective material. On both sides of the stove there are bricks that are heated by it. Thus, heat goes to both the dressing room and the shower room (additional heating of neighboring rooms). During its operation, the stove proved itself to be very positive (there were never any problems). The firewood burns (and burns out) well, the draft is excellent (sometimes I even use a damper), and condensation does not concentrate in the chimney. There is a pleasant aroma in the bathhouse, there is no burning smell. I hope my story will be useful to you. Stay healthy (and enjoy yourself)

I used Helo 12 stoves for 10 years, but they have now been discontinued. I bought the Harvia M2 because it has a chimney outlet at the back of the stove, like Helo. I don’t want to redo the chimney in the bathhouse, but there are no stoves with a rear exit, except Harvia. Helo I had 2 ovens. Each lived 5 years. I can’t say how long Harvey will live. When I picked it up, they took out a completely new one, factory sealed. They opened it in front of me, examined it for defects, and only after that did I pay. Helped with loading into the car. The stove itself is excellent, it transfers the temperature well to the stones, the protective casing does not deform, and heats up moderately.

Koster-Potok 18

Firstly, there is no convection in it and there won’t be with such a design, what kind of convection can there be if there is no direct contact with the stove itself, it’s just a lampshade near the stove. Therefore, in order to heat a bathhouse and steam room, you need to try and burn a lot of good firewood and at the same time change the water in the tank as it boils. The efficiency of the stove is probably 40-50%, the rest goes down the drain.

Teplodar Rus-18

The oven has been in operation for 5 years. A year later, one of the fasteners fell off the door. True, the second one turned out to be much stronger. And he holds the door for two!) And now I discovered that the smoke goes into the steam room, and not into the chimney. Removed the stones. And you can see in the photo what everything looks like. The grate was all cracked and arched. But it hasn't completely collapsed yet. The tooth that moves inside the firebox so that the smoke goes along a bypass path is also deformed and does not completely close the pipe. Therefore, part of the heat does not go to heating the stones, but directly into the pipe.

Ermak Uralochka 30

I tried to reach out to the manufacturer about the poor quality of this stove, sent both a video and a photo of the bathhouse with the stove, and how I did everything according to the instructions, but they gently kicked me off, citing dampness in the bathhouse! Come on guys, come on, rust in three days due to dampness, what nonsense! In short, I do not recommend this stove, save your money, look for other options!

Yatsenko Ivan

Kutkin Premium G-2.0

Advantages: A water heater is built inside and connected to an external heating tank. A net is hung at the back into which an additional 60-80 kg of stones can be placed for softer steam. Quite nice, I have a glass door. Disadvantages: Metal thickness 3mm. Cools down instantly. The entire firebox was damaged, such a stove lasts for a year at most. She started blowing smoke into the house, the glass became smoked and nothing helped. Now it warms up very poorly. Refuse to buy, buy 10-15 thousand more, but a good one!

Power calculation for a bath

The equipment described can produce different power during operation, and therefore, when choosing a suitable stove, this is the most important criterion.

The required power is determined based on parameters such as the total area of the bathhouse (including the steam room, dressing room and other rooms, if any). The larger the heating area, the more power the stove should have. It is extremely important to make accurate measurements of all parameters of the bathhouse, including its height, width, and chimney diameter.

Power is calculated according to the following principle:

  1. Multiply the width, length and height of the bath. For example, if a bathhouse is 3x2 in size and 2.2 meters high, then its volume will be 13.2 cubic meters.
  2. Next, heat loss through a door, window, brickwork or other partitions is calculated. Every square meter of the listed surfaces absorbs heat. To make a calculation, taking this factor into account, you need to multiply the area of the bathhouse by a factor of 1.2. If the steam room has a window whose size is 0.3 * 1.0 m = 0.3 square meters, and a door whose size is 1.8 * 0.8 m = 1.44 square meters, then the total heat loss will be (0.3 square meters + 1.44 square meters) * 1.2 = 2.088 cubic meters.
  3. The next step is to add the resulting total area of the bath with the area of heat loss. For example: 2 + 2.088 = 15.288 cubic meters.

Based on the data obtained, you can select a furnace of the required power, since manufacturers indicate in the technical data sheet of the equipment what area the furnace power is designed for. It is better to give preference to equipment whose power is in the range of 25 kW.

Documents that need to be completed to operate a gas sauna stove

fire certificate for gas stove

The first document that you must have is a certificate for the purchased equipment: burner or stove . Anything purchased in a store already has such a certificate.

Another important thing is this: the delivery package of the burner may include a hose with a reducer and other parts for connecting to bottled gas, which, if desired, can be purchased separately, but you need to know that if purchased separately, each part will need a certificate. This will complicate the permitting process.

When the equipment is installed but not yet connected, you need to call an inspector for an inspection . He should check everything and, if necessary, point out what needs to be corrected. After receiving the inspection result, a bypass of other authorities begins, the result of which will be obtaining a permit to operate the stove, which is issued by Rostekhnadzor.

The requirements for naturally aspirated models are stricter than for supercharged ones. In addition to fire safety measures and chimney insulation, as well as the presence of a spark arrestor at the end of the pipe, which applies to any type of burner, the draft and ventilation device will be checked.

"Legend" - notable characteristics

The Vesuvius Legend model is a reliable cast-iron version of a sauna stove. Design features and characteristics guarantee users increased efficiency - 80%. Cast iron options are characterized by accelerated heating of the room. The cast iron stove demonstrates resistance to temperature changes. Eliminating the slightest deformation at critical temperatures does not spoil the presentable appearance of the product.

The reliability of the stove is determined by the integrity of the seams. The volumetric mesh around the firebox holds 160 kg of material. With the same weight of the stove (160 kg), it is recommended to worry about a reinforced foundation. “Vesuvius Legend” lives up to its name and efficiently heats rooms from 10 to 28 cubic meters.

Heating system

In those areas where there is no possibility of gasifying the site, a cylinder unit with liquefied propane is often used to heat the bathhouse. Vessels filled with liquid fuel are sold at specialized stations.

When purchasing gas tanks, you should remember safety precautions during installation. Under no circumstances should cylinders be installed in a sauna room. They must be located in a ventilated and easily accessible area of the site, where there is also a fire extinguisher and a box filled with sand.

Making from a barrel

Among other options, you can use a barrel to make a homemade stove. For example, a sauna stove made from a 200-liter barrel would look good; let’s look at the stages of its manufacture:

  1. The first step is to determine the required height of the barrel using a grinder;
  2. Next, the inner walls of the barrel are lined with refractory bricks;
  3. You can limit the combustion chamber using metal sheets or mesh. Remember that the minimum height of the combustion chamber is 60 cm;
  4. Stones are laid out on a sheet of metal or mesh;
  5. Next, you should weld a lid to the barrel and install special doors for ease of use.

The most famous Russian companies producing gas furnaces

We are not interested in promoting any of the manufacturers, so we simply inform you that the Russian enterprises Teplodar and Termofor have ready-made gas stoves:

"Teplodar"

Stoves “Taman”, “Rus”, “New Rus”, “Laguna”, “Sibir”, “Sahara”, “Sibirsky Utes” have not only wood-burning, but also gas modifications. Some models from these lines are considered separately: Laguna-12 TK, Rus 9 LU, Rus 12 L, Sahara 24 LC.

"Termofor"

The Termofor company also has a couple of stoves with gas equipment. “Taimyr” is also on the site.

*** Well, if you are not afraid of the hassle of paperwork, a gas stove can really save a lot of work and money (this will come later, but at first you will have to spend a lot of money). But do not forget about the main thing - safety , because today we have all the means to prevent a household gas explosion.

Fire safety requirements

When installing any sauna stove, it is necessary to strictly comply with fire safety requirements, since the walls of the device heat up to fairly high temperatures during its operation. In order to ensure maximum safety and not have problems with regulatory organizations, it is recommended to install the stove in accordance with the provisions prescribed in SNiP 41-01-2003 (Chapter 6.6).

  • The first thing that needs to be done is to equip a reliable foundation for the main structure of the stove, which will be adjacent to the wall dividing the room. The foundation should be covered with heat-resistant material and then with metal sheet. Asbestos sheets were previously used as heat-resistant insulation. Today on sale you can find panels of pressed mineral wool, which is less dangerous from an environmental point of view, sheets of foam glass or EZHKAKH (heat-resistant structural mica plastic).
  • It is also necessary to provide a metal flooring in front of the combustion door, which will prevent the wooden floor from catching fire and simplify debris removal. The size of the pre-furnace sheet must be at least 400×800 mm.
  • If the partition between the steam room and the dressing room is wooden, then the opening through which the fuel channel will pass must be separated from the wood by brick or stone masonry. The distance between the stove and wooden walls should be 400÷450 mm.

In the version shown, the owner chose to fill the opening with bricks

  • Provided that an opening is installed along the end part of the wall through which the combustion channel will pass, a gasket made of heat-insulating material (mineral basalt wool or cement-fiber sheet) with a thickness of 40÷50 mm, the distance between the part of the wall built from combustible material and the outer wall oven can be reduced to 250 mm. • The distance between the ceiling of the bathhouse and the surface of the stove should not be less than 1200 mm.
  • The distance from the edge of the combustion door to the nearest door must be at least 1250 mm.
  • If you purchased a non-factory-made stove, or the device is independently made from sheet metal, then it is best to cover it with brick. Thus, it is possible to protect the structure of the bathhouse from fire, and people taking water procedures from burns. Factory products, as a rule, are made with double walls, between which thermal insulation material is laid or convection channels pass through.
