Sauna stoves "Castor": a review of designs proven over a century

Finnish Kastor stoves have long taken a leading position in the world market, and every year they are becoming more and more popular in Russia. Beautiful design, durability and safety – these are the things that “can-do-it-all” Russians are still willing to part with a considerable amount of money for. Yes, these stoves attract potential buyers primarily with their elegant design - here domestic models can no longer be compared.

  • 2 Why are Kastor sauna stoves so good?
  • 3 How to properly connect a chimney to a Kastor stove?

Kastor sauna stoves - environmentally friendly and economical

Founded in 1910, the Finnish company Castor has to date produced more than two million sauna stoves. Wood-burning and electric stoves for Kastor baths are actively used in both private and public saunas and baths as an effective, economical and safe source of heat.
The Kastor metal body is highly durable, allowing the stove to be used effectively for many years. Of particular note is the high efficiency of Castor stoves: the designs of this manufacturer have the effect of complete combustion of fuel, which makes them not only very economical, but also perfect from the point of view of concern for environmental cleanliness. How profitable Kastor models are in practice can be judged, for example, by the fact that in order to heat a small steam room to 100 degrees, only seven or eight 40-centimeter logs are required. Another important advantage of the attractive, inexpensive and easy-to-use Kastor sauna stoves is the patented Coanda air exchange system. This system ensures economical fuel consumption and long-term heat retention even after the coals have completely burned out.

More than 100 years in search of the perfect design

Such stoves have been produced for more than a century - that’s where the quality and thoughtfulness of the design come from. And this manufacturer develops electric heaters especially carefully - they have practically no analogues in the whole world. Therefore, if you are building a small sauna right in your apartment, an electric heater from Castor is the best purchase option!

Thus, for the first time, wood-burning stoves with a characteristic signature signature began to be produced back in 1910, and from that time on, the manufacturer’s production experience only began to be enriched. Many interesting discoveries were made; the model of the standard furnace was improved more and more with each modernization. By the way, it was Kastor that released the world’s first continuous combustion heater, and from its latest developments the world was surprised by the patented CONDA effect, thanks to which the efficiency of a conventional stove increases several times - here the system constantly directs air from the steam room into the stove, and even in the steam room it will be warm when the fire had long gone out.

Of course, a priori the sauna stove from this Finnish manufacturer is designed to operate in sauna mode - high temperature and dry air. But, if you line it with bricks like a regular stove, it will not be difficult to create the climate of a real Russian bathhouse. After all, stoves are made of high quality steel, which has special heat-resistant properties.

KSIS 20 JK - a classic sauna stove!

One of the most beautiful and popular models of Kastor stoves is the modern bath equipment Kastor Ksis 20 JK. This exquisite stove is part of the latest generation of stoves with a fire tunnel from the dressing room. Being built into the wall between the steam room and the dressing room (rest room), this design quickly and efficiently heats the sauna, while allowing you to simultaneously admire the flames through the fire-resistant glass door in the adjacent room. It is also important that the steam room remains completely clean!

Kastor - sauna stoves of excellent quality, versatility and reliability of equipment for baths and saunas... For those who truly understand the nuances of the sauna business, these words have long become synonymous!

Why are Kastor sauna stoves so good?

What makes these stoves most valuable is that they heat the steam room not only with heated stones and thermal radiation from the walls, but also with the help of convection. So, cold air enters through a special hole in the lower part of the stove, heats up and rises up into the steam room - through the firebox. The steam room heats up quickly and efficiently.

In addition, this same plate helps ensure that the air in the steam room is safe for health. After all, when burning wood, not only CO2 is often released (during the combustion of oxygen), but also dangerous carbon monoxide CO. Its presence is not uncommon for bathhouses and indicates that the fuel does not burn out completely. This is precisely why a plate is installed in Kastor stoves - so that through the gap between it and the stove wall, air can flow from the ash pan into the upper part of the firebox and help oxidize unburned gases. Those. This same CO, instead of going outside, burns inside the stove and provides additional heat. Not a bad idea, isn't it?

Here are some other advantages of Kastor sauna stoves over their analogues:

  • All new models of Kastor heaters have a double casing. Thus, an additional air flow is formed between the outer and inner, which helps reduce the heating of the outer wall and increases the overall air exchange in the bathhouse. In addition, this design is much more fireproof and can be placed a little closer to the walls than its other analogues - especially if the stove was purchased in soapstone or coil. This is a valuable point, especially for small steam rooms.
  • "Air control" The furnaces have a special plate on the back wall of the heater to control the air. This is a kind of protection for the back wall, which is always the most vulnerable when frying, and it is this plate that directs additional air to the combustion source and saves firewood.
  • The steel sheets of the stove are thoroughly calcined during production, and therefore already during operation they absorb harmful expansion when the heater heats up. What does this give? Much: the stress on the seams of the stove in the heat is much reduced, which guarantees the durability of the unit itself.
  • "Correct" par. This is steam that comes from water splashed onto hot stones. But what comes from hissing hot metal is not healthy and is not very pleasant in itself. And everything in this regard is decided by the number of stones - the more of them in the stove, the better, and Kastor sauna stoves are pleased with this - you can place from 32 kg to a whole hundredweight in their deep heaters.
  • Convenient chimney installation. It can be placed behind the heater body or on top of it.

And finally, Kastor are the only heaters in which the lifting door extends behind the front panel when opened. In addition, thanks to fireproof glass, the doors of these ovens can withstand up to 800˚C, which is not low at all.

So, which model should you choose? So, for a small bathhouse up to 12 m3, the Kastor KS-12 is suitable, into which you can load up to 40 kg of stones. But for steam rooms up to 24 m3 there is Kastor KS-27V with. Some Kastor models provide soot removal.

Absolutely everything in Kastor ovens is Finnish-made, with the exception of heat-resistant ceramic glass ROBAX, imported from Germany. Is it worth talking about the quality and reliability of such stoves?

Wood-burning heaters Kastor

Kastor has been manufacturing wood stoves for over 100 years, longer than any other well-known stove manufacturer in the world. The Kastor company (Finland) mass-produces wood-burning sauna stoves. Having dealt with fire for so long, Kastor specialists have learned not only its power, but also its capricious, changeable nature. Everyone can start a fire in the hearth, but controlling and subduing it is almost an art. Manufacturers of Kastor sauna stoves are guided by two principles when developing and manufacturing their products. Firstly, they should be simple and stylish. Secondly, they must be made from the best materials. Externally, the products look discreet and noble; in operation they are durable, reliable, and simple. Behind this simple formula lies all our many years of experience, as well as the use of modern technologies and materials.

Technical advantages of Kastor sauna stoves: The stoves are heated by two stacks of firewood, and the stones retain heat longer than usual. This is achieved thanks to the well-known and patented Coanda effect, according to which the air flow changes its direction when the firebox cools. Fast heating and long-term heat retention are also facilitated by the properties of the materials used, the large mass of stones, an additional guide plate in the firebox and tightly fitting doors.

Kastor stoves with lining

Castor stoves mean durability, economical use of money and environmental friendliness (patented technology - CONDA - waste-free combustion of fuel). The walls of the Kastor stove are made of the highest grade structural steel: these fireboxes are made of 5 mm steel, and the niche for stones is 8 mm. The Conda effect, which is used in these stoves, increases the efficiency of bath stoves to the level of 70%; with one batch of firewood (4-5 logs) you can count on a temperature of 100C based on the calculation of the volume of the steam room.

The heater, which has a high level of capacity (up to 90 kg of stones), makes it possible to acquire light steam in the steam room, and the independent system of stove chambers and the laying of stones makes it possible to feed on stones throughout the operation of the stove. The large combustion door allows you to watch the process of burning wood, enjoying the play of live fire.

Kastor wood burning stoves made of soapstone or coil are:

• The high level of heat capacity of the stone cladding (almost 3 times that of stove bricks) makes it possible to replace a Russian three-ton stove with a significantly smaller amount of soapstone.

• Therapeutic heat received from soapstone and coils, from which the lining is made, stimulates the functioning of the immune system, has a positive effect on blood circulation in the body, helps improve the functioning of the respiratory system and regulate metabolism.

• Reliable cladding system (glue-free base for installation, which does not require installation of a foundation under the furnace).

• “Acceleration” of the Kastor furnace (Castor), which ensures that the furnace reaches “operating” mode in 90-120 minutes.

• The ability to control air flows in the steam room, which you can easily use to obtain the conditions of a Russian bath, obtaining a light, humid climate in the steam room, without overheating it.

• Good humidity of air masses in the best modes of the Russian bath, obtaining lightness and freshness in the steam room.

• Soft warmth throughout the steam room, giving you the opportunity to enjoy a great steam bath at any point or position in the steam room.

• Ideal for installation with both stainless chimneys produced by Vulcan and the modern type - Schiedel.

Kastor sauna stoves in tandem with a Shidel ceramic chimney provide an excellent opportunity for economical placement of this structure in a steam room, occupying no more than one square meter.
